Fielding Position: Slip Cordon

Positions immediately behind and beside the keeper for catching the edge — primary new-ball positions.

Modern fielding standards were rewritten by South Africa's Jonty Rhodes in the 1990s; the flat, one-bounce throw and sliding stop are now coached from junior level.

First slip wider, second narrower, third narrower still; leg slip mirrors on the leg side.

Set with the new ball for swing/seam bowlers; reduce slips as the ball softens.

Standing too deep or too shallow; first slip at the keeper's edge of vision, second slip half a metre forward.
