Overcast Conditions

5 min read•4/19 sections

Grey skies, live , cautious batting.

Batting Response: Play late, leave more, target only clear scoring options. Cheteshwar Pujara and Alastair Cook built careers on surviving overcast sessions.

DLS Angle: Under thick cloud, watch the DLS par score — a lost session in the afternoon can flip the match; batters must weigh survival vs raising the par score.

Technical Breakdown

19-section schema

Definition

'Overcast' means heavy cloud with no direct sun — the classic English or Kiwi -morning condition that has produced more than half of the great spells in history.

Physics Involved

Cloud keeps the and ball 3-6°C cooler, preserves surface on the ball, and slows the drying of any dew or damp grass. The result is a livelier and longer-lasting lacquer.

Tactical Use

Bowling first is usually correct — Nasser Hussain's decision to bowl at Brisbane 2002 is the famous cautionary tale in the OTHER direction (sunny morning), but under genuine overcast every modern captain bowls.

Common Mistakes & Drills

Reading 'overcast' as 'will help all day' — a mid-morning sun burst often kills within 20 minutes. Track cloud in real time.
