Why White Balls Go Soft

ODI rules use two white balls (one from each end), changed in part because a single white ball softens and discolours within 30-35 overs.

White lacquer wears faster than red and dirt embeds in the surface, reducing hardness and the ability to maintain shine.

Pace bowlers attack with the harder ball at each change; spinners exploit the softer ball in the middle.
