The ICC banned saliva on the ball from 2020 (originally a COVID measure, made permanent in 2022). Sweat remains legal and is now the only sanctioned agent.
Tactical Use
Designated 'shiners' in each side maintain sweat application; some boards proposed wax (rejected).

Forgetting and licking fingers — automatic warning, then a 5-run penalty on the third offence.
